If you’re a died-in-the-wool carnivore, you might like to imagine that our forebears, the hunter-gatherers, sat down to a juicy piece of meat every day. They did not. They ate mostly what they foraged in the form of plant foods. Depending on geography, their diet may have included nuts, berries, roots, fruit, seeds, grains, leafy plants, mushrooms. In other words, it was a varied diet, and early hunter-gatherers were a hardy bunch.

Modern-day diets, alas, are limited in variety. Here in the Bay Area we have access to the most amazing seasonal foods year-round, so be daring! Don’t keep eating the same boring fare, but try something new — kale, rutabagas, collard greens, purple yams, watermelon radish. If you don’t know what to do with them, go online and find an appealing recipe. Surprise yourself, surprise your family, and enjoy the adventure!
